This regulated qualification is for learners that wish to demonstrate their knowledge in the Installation and Maintenance of Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems

Prerequisites and Assessment Methods

An Initial Assessment conducted by the Approved Centre (AC) on application for the qualification will determine the learner’s capability to complete the qualification.

Learners holding a level 2 or 3 vocational qualification in the Building Engineering Services (BES) sector which includes the current Water Regulations/Water Byelaws, Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems and Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating (or equivalent) will confirm their capability to complete the qualification.

Learners not holding the qualifications detailed above, are required to provide evidence to the AC of alternative suitable qualifications they hold and or provide confirmation of their job related work experience and skills.

Knowledge of the current Water Regulations, Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems and Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating can be demonstrated by learners completing the appropriate LCL Awards qualifications.

Learners undertaking this qualification for the purpose of meeting the membership requirements of any competent person scheme, registration body or other professional recognition must be made aware that there may be additional requirements.

 

Assessment through work performance activities, multiple choice examination and short response written assessment.

To deliver the Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems, a training centre must be approved by LCL Awards and meet their delivery and quality assurance requirements.

Centres must have qualified teachers and assessors with specialist knowledge of solar thermal systems, heating, and plumbing, supported by appropriate teaching and assessing qualifications. 

Assessment involves:

  • An online multiple-choice knowledge exam, set and marked by LCL Awards.
  • A practical performance assessment (set by LCL Awards and marked by centre-approved assessors).

Centres must therefore have secure IT facilities for exams, fully equipped workshops for practical tasks, and robust internal verification systems to ensure assessment quality and consistency.
