- Apply health, safety and environmental considerations in dwellings.
- Plan and oversee electrical work activities in dwellings.
- Apply design and installation practices including termination and connection of conductors in dwellings.
- Inspect, test, report and commission electrical systems in dwellings.
- Apply fault diagnosis and rectification in dwellings.
This qualification is designed solely for those persons who hold, as a minimum, a relevant Level 2 electrotechnical qualification and are, or have been, working in the electrotechnical sector, practicing as a domestic electrician for a minimum of three years’ which does not include time spent in education or training, who can demonstrate their technical knowledge, skills and competence to recognised industry standards and wish to gain a formal industry recognised Level 3 qualification.
This qualification is not for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, apprentices, operatives who require training or those who have completed an electrotechnical technical qualification with less than three years’ full-time relevant industry experience. A ‘Skills Scan’ must be completed as part of the initial assessment for learner enrolment onto this qualification.
This qualification has been developed to enable learners to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competency when carrying out electrical work activities in domestic dwellings. This includes demonstrating competency in accordance with legislation, regulations and industry standards. The qualification includes units which cover, health and safety, planning and overseeing electrical work, design and installation practices and procedures, inspection and testing and fault diagnosis and rectification.
Learners undertaking this qualification will typically be updating their electrotechnical sector qualifications or undertaking continuous professional development (CPD).
The Skills Scan is designed to establish the suitability of the experienced worker to enrol onto qualification.
This qualification forms part of the requirements for the Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) which when combined with the separate AM2ED assessment enables the experienced worker to apply for an ECS Domestic Electrician Gold Card. Learners must enrol onto the AM2ED within 18 months of qualification registration and achieve the qualification prior undertaking the AM2ED assessment

Prerequisites and Assessment Methods
This qualification is aimed at experienced and practicing electricians. On application for the qualification, the AC will carry out an Initial Assessment of the learner’s capability to complete the qualification. Learners who wish to enrol onto the qualification shall:
- have a minimum of three year’s industry experience as a practising domestic electrician; and
- hold at least a relevant Level 2 qualification as listed in the ‘Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment Skills Scan’ document; and
- complete the ‘Domestic Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment Skills Scan.
The Skills Scan forms part of the initial assessment conducted by the Approved Centre (AC) to establish the suitability of the learner to enrol onto the qualification. The Skills Scan document can be found here Domestic Electrician Skills Scan
To achieve and be awarded the qualification learners must hold the following industry recognised qualifications:
- Level 3 Award BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (current edition); and
- Level 3 Award Initial Verification, Periodic Inspection, Testing, Condition Reporting and Certification of Electrical Installations, or equivalent.
The listed qualifications may be held in advance of enrolling onto the qualification or undertaken in conjunction with the qualification.
The assessments comprise of:
- an e-portfolio of evidence of the learner’s on-site work
- an online multiple-choice examination
- a recorded and documented professional discussion

What careers can this qualification lead to?
This qualification is designed to support your recognition as a competent, qualified Domestic Electrician. Successful completion can lead to:
- Gold Card status via the Experienced Worker route
- Eligibility to join a Competent Person Scheme (CPS)
It provides formal industry recognition for electricians who have developed their skills through hands-on experience but lack a full Level 3 qualification.

What is involved in delivering this qualification?
To deliver this qualification, a training centre must be approved by LCL Awards and meet their quality assurance requirements.
Centres must employ qualified teachers and assessors with current electrotechnical experience and relevant teaching and assessing credentials. They must provide access to up-to-date regulatory documentation, including BS 7671, GN3, and relevant Building Regulations.
The qualification is achieved via the learner building a online portfolio of on-site evidence, multiple-choice assessment and professional discussion.
