Qualification Content

Heat Interface Units (HIUs) form the critical “Consumer Connection” within a heat network, controlling the delivery of domestic hot water and space heating to individual dwellings. As set out in the MEHNA Heat Network Installer Training guide, HIUs operate within a wider system that includes the Energy Centre, distribution networks, and substations, and their correct installation and commissioning directly affect performance, efficiency, and the consumer experience. Under the Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS), introduced by the Energy Act 2023, the installation and commissioning of HIUs are regulated to ensure that systems are installed as designed, commissioned correctly, and capable of delivering reliable, efficient outcomes for end users.

Given the technical complexity of heat networks, evolving standards such as TS1 and BS 8635, and the specific performance and acceptance testing requirements under HNTAS, installers must possess appropriate vocational competence and product-specific knowledge. As highlighted in the MEHNA guidance, installers are expected, as a minimum, to complete the HIU manufacturer’s training course for the unit being installed. A structured HIU course ensures installers know the system design intent, safe installation practices, commissioning procedures, and fault-finding techniques, thereby supporting compliance, protecting system efficiency, and safeguarding consumer confidence in heat network performance.

The Learner will:

  • know the regulations and standards that underpin the installation of HIU, and how a heat network functions
  • know the operating functions of HIUs and how HIU should be installed
  • know the installation requirements of HIU
  • be able to perform safe electrical isolation
  • be able to commission an HIU
  • know how and when to perform maintenance on an HIU
  • know fault-finding techniques on an HIU
