General Information
Course Structure and Learning Outcomes
The course is aimed at installers of domestic heating and hot water systems in dwellings who may not have undertaken any formal learning in designing heating and hot water systems and wish to improve their knowledge of the subject.
The course provides learners an appropriate level of knowledge which will enable them to design and specify domestic heating and hot water systems for dwellings accurately and in accordance with best practice and compliance with the relevant Building Regulations, Standards and the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design Guide.
Learners undertaking the course.
The course may serve as a progression route for learners who wish to progress to the LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings. It may also be used for learners undertaking an LCL Awards Managed Learning Program (MLP) which includes central heating and hot water systems, leading to ACS assessments CCN1 and CENWAT.
Learners will be required to undertake an element of home study prior to attending the guided learning inputs at the training centre.

The course is aimed at individuals who have sufficient knowledge and or experience of installing and or specifying the installation of hot water and heating systems in dwellings that will enable them to meet the demands of the learning outcomes

What is Involved in Delivering This Course?
Centres delivering the Gas Safety for Cavity Wall Insulation Course must be approved by LCL Awards and have teachers with relevant industry experience and appropriate qualifications.
Assessment involves the learner answering multiple-choice questions. Centres must adhere to the requirements of the LCL Awards' Approved Centre Quality Management System and the Centre Agreement in delivering the certification’s examinations and assessments.
Centres delivering the course must ensure that teachers have relevant industry experience and hold appropriate teaching qualifications.
Course delivery must provide learners with an introduction to domestic heating and hot water system design, using a mix of teacher-led sessions, guided study, and reference to current design standards.
Learning inputs must cover key topics including heat loss calculations, system types, and component selection, boilers, emitters, pipework, and pumps.
Learners should be able to apply design principles in line with current industry guidance, including the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design Guide.
Learner assessment is by a combination of a written multiple-choice exam and a design scenario task.
