A new QM for LCL Awards

15 Apr 2026

Toni Oakley-Tulk is our new Qualifications Manager (QM), specialising in plumbing, renewables, and F gas. She has worked as an engineer since leaving school and has always had a passion for machines, inspired to work in STEM by her father who was a motor mechanic.

At eighteen Toni became an apprentice for the car makers MG Rover and when the company went into administration in the spring of 2015, she moved to British Gas. Initially as an apprentice, and then as an engineer. After almost a decade at British Gas, Toni decided to make a career change and move into training.

She worked for Homeserve, where she became Engineer Training Consultant, a role that gave her the opportunity to teach Homeserve’s team of engineers, before moving on to a new job at a college where she completed her formal teaching qualifications: A Level 5 Certification in Education (Cert ed) and QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills).

Before joining us, Toni worked for Viessmann the boiler manufacturer, where her job involved training installers on Viessmann products and teaching a range of accredited courses covering gas, heating, and plumbing.

We asked her why she decided to make another career pivot, and become the newest member of our team:

Having had several roles delivering training in a range of educational settings, I felt ready for a change and became interested in the idea of supporting training facilities; looking at training from the other side as it were. I was attracted to the job at LCL Awards because as an Awarding Body, the company works hard to support its approved centres, maintaining a high level of support whilst upholding the quality and standards of training which are so important in our sector. It’s an interesting balance.

I’m looking forward to being involved in shaping some of the qualifications, fine-tuning the courses to make them even better. We've recently been part of a working group looking at new plumbing apprenticeship standards for levels 2 and 3 and I really hope we can use this to ensure that learners who qualify through this route are fully equipped to work in the industry.”

As well as her role as QM, Toni will be responsible for supporting some of our centres that offer training in renewables and plumbing, as an External Verifier (EV).

Toni works from her home in North Shropshire, where she lives with her husband and two children. When not at work, she can be found following motor racing or working on her own classic car – a Mini.
