Empowering the Next Generation of Gas Safe Engineers: A New Student Engagement Trial Launching in January 2026

Becoming a Gas Safe registered engineer is a proud milestone for any trainee, but the journey can be complex. To make that transition smoother, Capita and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in partnership with Talan, are launching an innovative student engagement trial to support learners as they prepare for a successful career in gas safety.

This new initiative aims to increase awareness of gas safety standards, improve confidence in compliance, and help students develop into competent, confident professionals ready to join the Gas Safe Register. By combining expert guidance, practical tools, and real-world insights, the trial will help future gas engineers build a stronger foundation for their careers.

The six-month programme, beginning in January 2026, will include five focused interventions designed to strengthen both technical knowledge and career readiness. These activities are tailored to the real challenges that gas safety students face, helping them connect their learning to professional practice.

Students taking part will benefit from:

  • Career guidance and business advice to support graduating trainees with next steps, self-employment, and long-term career planning.

  • Informational videos breaking down compliance requirements and registration processes in a clear, accessible format.

  • Career pathway maps that visually explain how to progress from training to full Gas Safe registration.

  • Meet-and-greet sessions with local inspectors to build relationships, demystify inspections, and improve communication.

  • Access to a dedicated technical helpline where trainees can seek professional guidance and practical advice.

To ensure meaningful outcomes, the project aims to engage around 600 students from training centres across the UK. By capturing survey data at key points throughout the programme, Talan will measure improvements in student understanding, confidence, and preparedness for registration. The insights gained will help shape how future training and student support are delivered across the gas industry.

Stakeholder collaboration will play a vital role in the success of this trial. Training providers and partners can support by sharing Talan’s communications with students, distributing short surveys, and connecting the team with other providers who want to get involved. Together, we can help raise standards and give students the tools they need to thrive in their careers.

This initiative represents a major step forward in supporting students as they enter the gas safety profession—bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, and ensuring the next generation of gas engineers is fully equipped for success.
