Cambridgeshire born Ben Shipp has just started work as LCL Awards’ Electrical Qualification Manager and will join our EQA team. He brings a wealth of experience to both roles.
In the early 1990’s Ben trained as an electrical apprentice and went on to become an electrician. He was Lead Electrician at RAF Mildenhall, responsible for the base’s HVAC systems for several years, before he moved to Anglian Water where he worked as a Clean Water Technician and Commissioning Engineer on Major Capital schemes.
In 2018, Ben made a big career change and began working as a lecturer for West Suffolk College, where he later became Group Head of Faculty for Electrotechnical, delivering courses and assessing candidates as well as managing his team.
Whilst at the college, he developed several consultancy roles for City and Guilds and other Awarding Organisations, and became a Subject Matter Expert for OFQUAL.
His move to LCL Awards was triggered by a desire to work from a new perspective, developing assessments rather than delivering them.
“The experience I’ve had in the past will help me in my role here, whether it’s working with partner organisations to design qualifications that build competencies in vocational training across the country or supporting centres as an EQA. I’m passionate about the industry and enjoy networking. Being involved in steering groups across the industry gives me the opportunity to help shape policies that improve standards in our sector, and that’s very rewarding.
“I can see there’s a great team at LCL Awards. I’m looking forward to being part of it as well as bringing my own skills to the table. We all have our areas of expertise and work together to uphold the highest standards in developing BSE qualifications and ensuring our approved centres deliver them effectively.”
When he’s not out on the road supporting LCL Awards Centres, Ben will work from home in Norfolk’s Thetford Forest, where he’s lived for a number of years.
“I love the peace and quiet of Norfolk, I’m interested in local history and exploring the countryside as well as finding new places to eat out. I’m also a keen Rugby fan and as I’m a Cambridge lad, a loyal supporter of Cambridge Rugby Union Football club.”
