North Yorkshire based centre wins LCL Awards’ Green Award for 2025!
18 Jul 2025
GTEC won the Green Centre Award at our recent Awards in Birmingham. We were looking for a centre that makes an exceptional contribution to upskilling the installer base for net zero, whilst more generally promoting the use of renewable technologies in the built environment.
Our panel of judges, Charlotte Lee of the HPA, Stewart Clements of HHIC, Hattie Hasan MBE, inclusivity advocate, and Bret Forster of NAPIT were on the lookout for a centre spearheading the drive to ensure the building services engineering workforce can meet the complex challenge of decarbonisation, delivering training that nurtures a new generation of multi-skilled installers ready to face the future by demonstrating an all-round commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.
They found it at GTEC, which is now part of the United Living group. Our judges said:
“GTEC is a prime example of how a training centre can lead the way in preparing the installer base for the challenges of decarbonisation. The company plays its part in the contribution to upskilling the installer base whilst more generally promoting the use of renewable technologies in the built environment.”
GTEC’s Head of Operations, Sam Graham, expanded on what the company is successfully doing to shape the workforce required to build a greener future:
“As the demand for renewable technologies grows, we have adapted our training to ensure that installers have the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to work with a range of sustainable systems, from heat pumps to solar PV and energy storage solutions.
“Our courses are designed with a clear focus on building multi-disciplinary skills, allowing installers to work across a range of technologies. This approach not only addresses the immediate skills gap in renewable energy installation but also prepares workers for the future demands of a decarbonised built environment.
“GTEC’s approach ensures that installers not only gain the technical expertise required but also adopt a mindset rooted in sustainable practices. As a centre that ‘practices what it preaches,’ we integrate energy-efficient practices into our operations, ensuring that our actions align with the industry’s drive for a greener future. Our facilities are energy-efficient, featuring state-of-the-art systems that showcase the potential of renewable technologies in action.
“We have contributed to several IET reports to help shift the mindset of installers towards energy-efficient solutions. As an Executive Member of the Heat Pump Association, we have the opportunity to play a leading role in shaping the future of sustainable heating in the UK supporting and promoting innovation and raising industry standards.
“Our partnerships with industry leaders, such as City Plumbing, Michael Pavis, NIBE, V-TAC have enabled us to offer cutting-edge training on the most innovative products and solutions available. This ensures that our trainees are at the forefront of technological advancements in renewable energy, equipping them with the necessary skills to implement the latest technologies in real-world settings, using real life rigs. We even built a mock house in our training centre for specialist training on wall insulation and working at heights.
“Energy Storage Systems are crucial to the future of solar and other renewable systems. Our recent partnership with V-TAC has enabled us to offer training on their new All-in-One battery storage solution which is new to the market.
“We don’t just talk the talk. Our facilities are energy-efficient, featuring systems that showcase the potential of renewable technologies in action. We actively reduce our carbon footprint by using sustainable building materials, and renewable energy sources to power our operations. Moreover, we incorporate sustainability into our day-to-day practices, such as recycling, reducing waste, and promoting the use of energy-efficient equipment across all courses. Our aim is to create an environment where both trainers and trainees learn about renewable technologies and engage in sustainable practices that can be applied in their lives as well as their careers.
“We are confident that our work in upskilling the next generation of installers is making a real and lasting impact on the path towards net zero and we’re thrilled to have won LCL Awards’ Green Centre Award this year, it’s another feather in our cap!”
